Hepatoprotective effect of Teucrium veronicoides

Objectives: Teucrium veronicoides is Korean traditional herb that has effect on anti-cancer and anti-inflammation. We examined the hepatocyte protective effect of Teucrium veronicoides water extract (TVE) on apoptosis, mitochondrial dysfunction, ROS production and AMPK activation.
Methods: To evalute the hepatocyte protective effect of TYE, we examined the cell viabillity, inhibition of mitochondrial dysfunction and AMPK activation using MTT assay, western blotting and flourescnece activated cell sorter (FACS) on AA+iron induced HepG2 cells known as the human-drived hepatocyte cell. We also examined ROS production on AA+iron induced HepG2 cells. Results: TVE inhibited the cell death and decrease in the apoptosis-associated protein levels such as pro-caspase, PARP on AA+iron induced HepG2 damage. TVE also protected HepG2 cell against AA+iron induced mitochondrial membrane dysfunction.
Conclusion: TVE protected hepatocytes against AA+iron induced-apoptosis, MMP dysfunction and ROS production. And TVE induced AMPK activation.
